Amazon Joins Google, Microsoft in generative AI race

Amazon Web Services on Thursday unveiled Amazon Bedrock, which helps build generative AI-powered apps.

AWS’ AI works through pre-trained models from startups including AI21 Labs, Anthropic, and Stability AI.

“Applying machine learning to the real world — solving real business problems at scale — is what we do best,” Vasi Philomin, VP of generative AI at AWS, told TechCrunch

“We think every application out there can be reimagined with generative AI.”

Bedrock’s launch was largely foreshadowed by AWS’ recent agreements with generative AI firms, as well as its rising investments in the technology required to build generative AI apps.

Stability AI chose AWS as its preferred cloud provider in November, and Hugging Face and AWS worked in March to transfer the former’s text-generating algorithms to the AWS platform.

AWS recently launched a generative AI accelerator for companies and announced a collaboration with Nvidia to develop a “next-generation” infrastructure for training AI models.

Bedrock is Amazon’s most aggressive foray into the generative AI sector, which Grand View Research believes may be worth over $110 billion by 2030.

AWS clients can use Bedrock to access AI models from a range of suppliers, including AWS, via an API.

For one thing, Amazon has not disclosed formal pricing. However, the company stressed that Bedrock is geared at major customers building “enterprise-scale” AI products, distinguishing it from some AI model hosting providers.

AI21 Labs’ Jurassic-2 family, which is multilingual and can generate text in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and Dutch, is among the third-party models hosted on Bedrock.

Anthropic’s model on Bedrock, Claude, is capable of a variety of conversational and text-processing tasks. Meanwhile, Stability AI’s Bedrock-hosted text-to-image models, like Stable Diffusion, can generate images, art, logos, and graphic designs.
