Apple explores MacBook production in Thailand to reduce reliance on China

Tech giant, Apple is discussing with suppliers about manufacturing MacBooks in Thailand as part of the company’s efforts to reduce its reliance on China.

The suppliers involved in the talks already have manufacturing facilities in Thailand for other clients, and they are discussing the possible assembly and production of components and modules for MacBooks.

Apple has been manufacturing its Apple Watch in Thailand for over a year. Apple has not responded to requests for comments, and Reuters could not identify the suppliers mentioned in the report.

The company and its key suppliers have been shifting their production away from China due to COVID-19 restrictions and geopolitical tensions between China and the US.

In a separate report by Bloomberg News, Apple has tripled its production of iPhones in India, manufacturing over $7 billion worth of smartphones in the country in the last fiscal year.

Apple now produces almost 7% of its iPhones in India, up from 1% in 2021. Apple has not commented on its India production.

In line with this trend, Foxconn and Pegatron Corp are also diversifying their production away from China.

Foxconn announced plans to increase investments outside of China, while Pegatron is in talks to establish a second factory in India.
