Apple opens first retail store in India

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has inaugurated the company’s first retail store in India, attracting around 300 fans to the event in Mumbai.

Despite the availability of Apple products online, some enthusiasts camped overnight for the chance to get Cook’s signature and be among the first to enter the store.

The new store, located in Mumbai’s Jio World Drive mall, features local music and folk dancers, drawing in people from across the country.

Apple’s expansion into India has been slowed by hurdles in opening physical stores, although its products are available via e-commerce.

The new store comes as Indian consumers increasingly look to upgrade their smartphones, though Apple still only accounts for 3% of the market

The new store will be followed by another in Delhi on Thursday. Cook is also set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the deputy IT minister later this week.

Meanwhile, Apple is also increasing manufacturing in India, with iPhones now assembled in the country.
