Google, Microsoft CEOs to meet US VP over AI

Alphabet, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic CEOs will meet with Vice President Kamala Harris and other administration officials on Thursday to discuss major artificial intelligence challenges.

According to Reuters, the invitation to the CEOs stated President Joe Biden’s “expectation that companies like yours must ensure that their products are safe before making them available to the public.”

Concerns regarding fast-growing AI technology include potential privacy violations, bias, and the spread of scams and misinformation.

In April, Biden stated that it remains to be seen whether AI is dangerous, but that technology companies have a responsibility to safeguard the safety of their products. He claimed that social media has already demonstrated the harm that strong technology can cause when not properly safeguarded.

As concerns about AI’s impact on national security and education mount, the administration has asked for public feedback on suggested accountability mechanisms for AI systems.

Deputies from the White House Domestic Policy Council and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy wrote in a blog post on Monday about how the technology can endanger workers.

According to Reuters, Biden’s Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Director of the National Economic Council Lael Brainard, and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo will attend the Thursday meeting.
