Montana gov to extend TikTok ban to other platforms

Montana Governor, Greg Gianforte is attempting to broaden a measure that would prohibit not only TikTok but also other social media apps that send specific data to foreign adversaries.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Montana senators enacted SB 419 earlier this month to prohibit TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese digital company ByteDance, from functioning in the state.

If the bill becomes law, TikTok, Apple Inc, and Alphabet Inc’s Google, which manage mobile app shops, will face fines if they break the restriction.

The governor’s proposed language in the broader law exempts app shops from liability for offering such social networking programmes for download in the state, according to the WSJ, citing a revised draft of the bill.

Some US politicians are calling for a statewide ban on TikTok because to concerns about Chinese government influence on the platform.

The short-form video app has frequently denied sharing data with the Chinese government and has stated that it would not do so if asked.
