Netflix to invest in live sports, pushes for streaming rights– WSJ

Netflix to debut subscription with ads

Streaming platform, Netflix might invest in live sports broadcast as the company has initiated a bidding process to acquire streaming rights for some sports leagues.

This was disclosed by Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

According to the report, the company recently made a bid for the ATP tennis tour streaming rights for some European nations, including France and the U.K., but later withdrew.

WSJ also reported that the company was in talks to buy the World Surf League and also discussed bidding for other events, such as the U.K. rights to the Women’s Tennis Association and cycling competitions.

According to the report, Netflix executives have considered purchasing lower-profile leagues to avoid the rising costs of bidding for sports rights, while others believe that given the platform’s size, they can turn lesser-known sports into franchises.
