Six fantastic Netflix movies to watch out for in June

Netflix to drop charges after losing customers

The second half of the year 2022 is upon us and new movies are expected to hit our television screens and smartphones beginning from the 1st of June.

While the first half of the year has seen the release of some of the year’s biggest movies, we’re all looking forward to hotter releases which would top these bars.

This weekend saw the release of Stranger Things Season 4 Part 1, but that’s barely even the start of it.

Netflix, a popular American streaming platform has suffered bad press in the recent week. Amid huge subscribers losses and financial troubles, the company had pulled the plug on some of its shows in development. Nonetheless, the company is not slowing down on delivering movies which could potentially make it to the list of some of the year’s biggest.

Considering a mix of different genres to add to your watchlist in June? Here’s our top pick

1. Glamour Girls:

The Nollywood movie is a remake of the 1994 Nollywood movie “Glamour girls” which tells the story of independent single women embarking on their own paths within Nigeria’s traditionally patriarchal society.

The 2022 remake will star Nollywood actors, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Sharon Ooja, Joselyn Dumas, Segilola Ogidan, Temisan Emmanuel and Toke Makinwa.

Produced by Play Network studio, an award-winning production company, its official release date is set at June 24.

2. Interceptor

Co-produced by Marvel movie star, Chris Hemsworth and starring Elsa Pataky, the upcoming action- thriller is an adaptation of a novel by Australian Novelist, Matthew Reilly. It is set to be released on June 3, 2022

According to the Tech Radar, Pataky plays Captain JJ Collins, an army officer who is reluctantly stationed on a Pacific Ocean-based nuclear missile interceptor base after she’s wrongfully forced to leave her dream job at the Pentagon. When the charismatic US soldier-turned-criminal Alexander Kessel (Luke Bracey) infiltrates the offshore camp, alongside his expertly-assembled crew of mercenaries, with the aim of carrying out a potentially apocalyptic plan, Collins becomes the last line of defence in preventing Kessel and company from carrying out their villainous plan.

It promises to be filled with action-gripping scenes

3. Umbrella Academy (Season 3)

The third and final instalment of the superhero-centred series is set to be released on June 22. The multiple award-winning ten episodes time travel series will return with its main cast. Not only that, The Umbrella Academy has been replaced by a more powerful, collaborative, and cool superhero team called The Sparrow Academy.

The show promises “plenty of drama, musical dance numbers, witty retorts, and dysfunctional family-based action”. A trailer and several teasers are available on the official Netflix’s YouTube page

4. Spiderhead

The Sci-fi thriller to be released on June 17 stars Chris Hemsworth, and Steve Abensti, a so-called brilliant and charismatic visionary who founded the state-of-the-art, offshore penitentiary known as Spiderhead. Here, inmates can sign up for an experiment, which fits with a surgically attached device that administers doses of mind-altering drugs, in exchange for their lengthy jail terms.

Based on George Saunders’ short story for The New Yorker, Spiderhead is directed by Joseph Kosinski, whose previous credits include the underrated Tron: Legacy, the Tom Cruise-starring Oblivion, and, as mentioned, Top Gun: Maverick. It will be released on June 17.

5. Hustle

Starring American actor, Adam Sandler, Hustle is a sports movie invariably mixed with romance. In it, we get to see Queen Latifah as an on-screen married couple with Sandler.

According to IMDB, Hustle will tell the story of  “A washed-up basketball scout (Sandler) who discovers a phenomenal streetball player while in Spain and sees the prospect as his opportunity to get back into the NBA”.

Be prepared to laugh and cry at this likely inspirational drama. It will be released on June 8, 2022.

6. Love to Hate You

Korean dramas became popular among the Nigerian audience in 2008. Following the release of the hit romantic comedy Business Proposal in April, Netflix is set to release another romantic comedy.

Love to Hate You tells the story of a career-focused woman who hardly makes time for relationships. Soon, she meets Korea’s Most Popular actor, Nam Kang Ho, and the story takes on from there.

Though an official release date has not been stated, it is set to be released sometime in the latter half of the year
