Twitter permits publishers to charge users for reading articles

Twitter’s CEO, Elon Musk, disclosed on Saturday that starting in May, the microblogging platform will charge users to read articles from their favourite media publishers.

Elon Musk who has been making structural changes geared towards revenue generation made this known in a tweet shared on the platform.

“Rolling out next month, this platform will allow media publishers to charge users on a per article basis with one click. This enables users who would not sign up for a monthly subscription to pay a higher per article price for when they want to read an occasional article,” he tweeted.

This new structural change that will be rolled out on Twitter by next month means that media publishers can now add paywalls to their articles, and readers will have to pay before reading the article.

This policy is targeted at those who have no subscription to the media organization but want to read articles occasionally.

With this policy, those who are not subscribers to the media organization will pay a higher amount

Musk added that this should be a win-win for media organizations and the users of the microblogging platform.

Since taking over ownership of Twitter, Elon Musk has introduced different policies to help Twitter generate revenue, including laying off some of the employees and introducing paid Twitter verification checkmarks.
