US moves to regulate ChatGPT, others

OpenAI introduces incognito mode to ChatGPT

The administration of President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced that it is seeking public feedback on potential controls for artificial intelligence systems.

ChatGPT captured the public’s attention due to its ability to write quick responses to a wide range of queries, and it became the fastest-growing consumer application in history, with more than 100 million monthly active users.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, a Commerce Department agency that advises the White House on telecommunications and information policy, is seeking feedback because there is “growing regulatory interest” in an AI “accountability mechanism.”

The agency wants to know if there are any safeguards in place to ensure that “AI systems are legal, effective, ethical, safe, and otherwise trustworthy.”

“Responsible AI systems have the potential to provide enormous benefits, but only if we address the potential consequences and harms.” Companies and consumers must be able to trust these systems for them to reach their full potential, according to NTIA Administrator Alan Davidson.

“Tech companies have a responsibility, in my view, to make sure their products are safe before making them public,” he said.

President Joe Biden stated last week that it remains to be seen whether artificial intelligence is dangerous.
