Duolingo sets sight on music learning app

Duolingo, a language-learning app with more than 500 million users, is developing a music app.

According to a job posting on Duolingo’s career page, the Pittsburgh-based tech company is currently hiring a learning scientist who is “an “expert in music education who combines both theoretical knowledges of relevant learning science research and hands-on teaching experience.”

According to the job description, the app will teach basic concepts in music theory using popular songs and teachers.

Duolingo has gradually expanded beyond language learning to include a number of ancillary new projects that could generate significant revenue in the future.

Duolingo Math was announced in October 2022 as the company’s first subject expansion beyond its original roots of language learning and literacy. The math app is free and works similarly to language learning in that both require methodical thinking and the ability to apply functions to arrive at answers.

Music is a subject that falls somewhere between language, which requires nuance and context, and maths, which requires a focus on formulas to provide correct answers, or in this case, sounds.

Duolingo requires users to have a basic understanding of language, math, and music.

Duolingo distinguishes itself by focusing on building blocks rather than specific mastery as a method of learning a skill.

According to the most recent quarterly update, Duolingo more than doubled its paid subscriber base last year. Total revenue is expected to nearly double to $369.5 million in 2022.

It’s unclear how Duolingo’s music app will look in the coming months.
