Margrethe Vestager, the European Union’s head of technology regulation, said on Sunday that the group will likely reach a political accord this year that will clear the way for the world’s first big artificial intelligence law.

This would be in addition to a preliminary agreement agreed on Thursday on the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act.

Vestager suggested legislative measures for the use of AI technologies, such as “labelling obligations for AI-generated images,” in an interview with Reuters during a Group of Seven digital ministers’ meeting in Takasaki, Japan.

“There was no reason to hesitate and to wait for the legislation to be passed to accelerate the necessary discussions to provide the changes in all the systems where AI will have an enormous influence,” she continued when questioned about the measures that must be taken before any agreement is reached.
