Google disclosed on Wednesday that the company will start displaying a blue checkmark next to senders’ names on Gmail.
This is in a bid to verify their identity, the tech giant said on Wednesday.
According to Google, the blue checkmarks will automatically appear next to the names of companies that have accepted Gmail’s existing Brand Indicators for Message Identification feature.
The BIMI feature, which rolled out in 2021, requires Gmail users to use strong authentication and verify their brand logo before they can display a brand logo as an avatar in Gmail.
Also, a checkmark will appear next to the names of individuals who have adopted the BIMI feature.
This update will help users to identify messages from authentic sources and also prevent a hack.
“Strong email authentication helps users and email security systems identify and stop spam, and also enables senders to leverage their brand trust,” the company explained in a blog post.
“This increases confidence in email sources and gives readers an immersive experience, creating a better email ecosystem for everyone.” Google added.
The blue verified checkmarks takes effect immediately across Workspace accounts and personal Gmail account.
Ever since Twitter CEO, Elon Musk introduced paid check marks for Twitter users, other big tech companies like Microsoft’s LinkedIn and Meta have followed suit.
