The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has promised that his administration will give the booming tech ecosystem in Lagos the support the sector needs.
Sanwo-Olu made this promise in his continuing campaign for his administration ahead of the March 18 gubernatorial elections.
“We are committed to working with all stakeholders to promote the growth of technology and blockchain, including crypto, in Lagos State.,” Sanwo-Olu promised.
The governor always commended young Nigerians who are at the forefront of championing the tech ecosystem in Nigeria.
“We are proud of our young people, and we believe that their success is a testament to the potential of our state,” he said.
“We would continue to support and create opportunities for others to join them”
The Nigerian tech ecosystem, with Lagos as the headquarters, has had massive success in recent years with the acquisition of Paystack for $200M by Stripe and the unicorn status of Flutterwave as a testament to the growth of the industry.
However, the sector hasn’t enjoyed much support from the Nigerian government, and young Nigerians who work in it haven’t had it easy. Epileptic power supply, poor network, brutality by security operatives, especially the Nigerian police, and getting stereotyped as a fraudster are many of the challenges of the average young person working in tech in Nigeria.
It will be recalled that in 2020, the Nigerian government banned cryptocurrency in Nigeria, and how governor Sanwo-Olu intends to give support to the digital means of exchange raises a question.
