Shell Plc announced on Wednesday that it will deploy artificial intelligence technologies from big-data analytics firm SparkCognition in its deep sea exploration and production to increase offshore oil output.
Shell, the largest oil producer in the United States Gulf of Mexico, will use SparkCognition’s AI algorithms to interpret and analyse enormous amounts of seismic data in its search for new oil resources.
“We are committed to finding new and innovative ways to reinvent our exploration ways of working,” Shell’s vice president of innovation and performance, Gabriel Guerra, said in a statement.
The goal is to improve operational efficiency and speed, as well as to boost exploration production and success. According to the corporations, the new approach can reduce exploration time from nine months to less than nine days.
“Generative AI for seismic imaging can positively disrupt the exploration process and has broad and far-reaching implications,” said Bruce Porter, chief science officer at SparkCognition in Austin, Texas.
According to the corporations, the technique would generate subsurface photos with fewer seismic data scans than typical, assisting with deep sea preservation. Seismic technology employs sound waves to investigate subterranean locations.
