A non-government organisation, Cafe Scientifique Woman, in partnership with the Ebonyi State University has sensitised 25 women on capacity building through the use of science and technology.

The Cafe Scientifique Woman is a platform to empower and spotlight women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics through mentorship and knowledge sharing activities.

The founder of the platform, Chioma Aja, said in Abakaliki on Thursday during the sensitisation of the 25 women, that the platform runs as one of the projects of Rouleaux Foundation in partnership with the Ebonyi State University.

Aja said that the project aimed at connecting young girls studying STEM courses with some of Ebonyi’s best minds and experts in making exploits in any field of their specification.

“I believe that women are very resilient. The aim of bringing up STEM is to encourage and educate women on the need to build their capacity through science.

“We also intend to bring up the women in the field of science, for them to always stand out among their mates.

“We have also found out that there are few women in the field of STEM. The programme tends to bridge such gaps and empower women to stand out.

“We want to educate women on learning, research, writing, presentation, scientific communication as well as invention so that they can tackle challenges facing the nation through science and technology,” she stated.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Ebonyi State University, Happiness Oselebe, said the event was a welcome development to encourage women in the area of Science not only in Ebonyi but in the country at large.

Osebele, a mentor and a supporter of the Cafe Scientifique Woman, said the sensitisation of the people would go a long way in bridging the gap of women’s reduction in STEM.

“There is the need to catch them young, especially, the passion as they begin to plan from the very beginning of their capacity and goal setting.”

On science development in Nigeria, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor decried the challenges in the field and urged young ladies to be committed to building their capacities.
